Searching for Shadows…

I believed there once were dragons
I’d heard the tales they told
Of fire breathing lizards
Brave and fierce and bold

Once when I was walking home
Down narrow back streets
Past barking dogs
I saw two timid creatures
Searching for shadows
And a place to hide

They didn’t want to be recognised
And the larger of the two
Put a protective wing
Around his companion
They didn’t breathe fire
But implored me with sad eyes
To go, not to tell

There was no dragon roar

And now when they ask
‘Do you believe in dragons?’
I look up at the sky
And tell them
‘I’m really not sure.’
